Behind the Lens: A Day in the Life at a Kerala Wedding
What does a wedding photographer actually do from 5am to midnight? A candid look at what goes into capturing your most important day.
Most people see the photographs. Very few see what goes into making them. Here's an honest, behind-the-scenes look at a full day of wedding photography with the Camrin Films team.
5:00 AM — Before the World Wakes
We're up before the alarm. Gear is checked the night before, but we go through it again: camera bodies, lenses, memory cards, batteries, flash units, wireless transmitters. A dead battery at the wrong moment is unforgivable. Coffee. Then we're on the road.
6:30 AM — Arriving at the Getting-Ready Location
We arrive before the bride does. This gives us time to assess the light, move furniture if needed (we always ask permission), and set up quietly before the energy of the morning begins. The first hour of getting-ready is the most intimate and the most beautiful — the quiet conversations, the gentle hands of a mother adjusting her daughter's saree, the nervous laughter.
8:00 AM — The Groom's Side
Our second photographer is with the groom's family simultaneously. Two locations, two stories unfolding in parallel. We stay in contact via earpiece throughout the day.
10:30 AM — The Ceremony
Kerala wedding ceremonies are layered and long. We've been to ceremonies that lasted 45 minutes and ceremonies that lasted four hours. We're positioned before the first guest arrives. We know the sequence of rituals. We know where the light will fall and when. We don't direct. We observe, anticipate, and capture.
1:30 PM — Family Formals
This is the hour that tests patience and diplomacy. Gathering specific family members, managing the chaos of a large Kerala family, keeping everyone smiling — it's a skill in itself. We move efficiently and warmly.
4:00 PM — Golden Hour Portraits
This is what we've been waiting for all day. Twenty minutes with just the couple. The light is everything. We walk them through simple, natural interactions — not poses, but moments. A whispered joke. A slow walk. The results are the images couples print and hang on their walls.
9:00 PM — Reception and Party
By now we've been on our feet for 15 hours. But the energy of a Kerala wedding reception is electric, and it carries us. The dancing, the speeches, the first dance — these are joyful images that complete the story.
11:30 PM — Wrap
We pack in silence. 2,000+ images captured on dual memory cards. Safe, backed up, protected. Tomorrow we begin the edit. But tonight, driving home through Kerala's sleeping streets, there's nothing but satisfaction.
This is what we do. And we love every second of it.
