Indian Couples, European Weddings: Our Guide to Shooting Abroad
More Indian couples are choosing European destinations for their wedding celebrations. Here's what you need to know about destination wedding photography in Europe.
The destination wedding trend has expanded dramatically beyond India's own extraordinary landscape — Indian couples are increasingly choosing European settings for their celebrations, combining Indian ceremony traditions with the romantic backdrop of Tuscany, the Algarve, the Greek islands, Switzerland's alpine meadows, or the lavender fields of Provence. The results are visually stunning: traditional Indian attire set against European stone and terrace, lehenga against a Santorini sunset, pheras in a Venetian courtyard. For photography, these settings create something genuinely unlike anything possible on home soil.
Choosing a photographer for a European destination wedding involves a decision most couples do not fully consider: do you bring your Indian photographer from home, or hire a European photographer who is based at your destination? There are strong arguments for both. Your Indian photographer knows you, understands your rituals and traditions, and will document the Indian ceremony elements with genuine cultural understanding. A local European photographer will know the venue intimately, understand the light at different times of year, and have established relationships with venue coordinators. The ideal solution — and the one we recommend when budget allows — is to bring your lead photographer from India and supplement with a local second shooter who knows the terrain.
Logistics for destination photography differ substantially from domestic coverage. Camera equipment must be transported in carry-on luggage (never checked), which means careful packing and potentially splitting equipment across team members' bags. Research customs regulations at your destination — some countries require documentation for commercial photography equipment. Ensure your photographer has comprehensive travel insurance that covers equipment damage, theft, and trip cancellation. Discuss all of these logistics in your pre-trip planning calls.
The best European destinations for Indian wedding photography, based on our experience, are Tuscany (Florence, Siena, and the surrounding countryside offer medieval churches, vineyard estates, and hill towns with extraordinary visual variety), the Amalfi Coast (the clifftop towns of Positano and Ravello offer views that feel almost unreal), Portugal's Douro Valley (relatively undiscovered by Indian couples, with rolling vineyard hills and historic quintas at more accessible price points than Italy), and Switzerland (Interlaken and the Bernese Oberland provide alpine drama that creates a completely different visual vocabulary from India's landscapes).
One practical note on timing: European summers (June through August) offer long days with golden hour as late as 9–10 PM in northern destinations — an extraordinary advantage for photography. Spring (April–May) offers wildflower meadows and fewer crowds. Autumn (September–October) brings harvest colours in wine regions and warm light that is arguably more cinematic than summer. Winter in southern Europe — Portugal, southern Italy, Greece — can be mild and uncrowded, with softer light and venues available at significantly reduced rates. Whatever season you choose, plan your shooting schedule around the available light in your specific location; a photographer who has researched the destination in advance will give you far better results than one who arrives without preparation.
