Syrian Christian weddings in Kottayam
The Malankara Orthodox Church, the Jacobite Syrian Church, the Syro-Malankara Catholic tradition: all of them are woven into the daily life of Kottayam in a way that is inseparable from everything else here. Weddings in this context are not simply family celebrations. They are occasions of genuine religious and communal weight, and the families treat them accordingly.
Kottayam church ceremonies tend to run longer and be more formally structured than church weddings in other parts of Kerala. The liturgy is followed closely. The older churches in the district have a quality of interior space that is difficult to describe: stone walls, dim natural light, centuries-old woodwork. We do not try to change what the light does in those spaces. The photographs that come from working with it rather than fighting it are some of the most atmospheric we make.
Rubber estate settings
Kottayam's rubber estates offer a wedding setting that exists almost nowhere else in India. The dense green of a mature rubber plantation, the cool air under the canopy, the red laterite paths between the trees: families who use estate grounds for their reception create a visual contrast with the church ceremony that is one of the most distinct photographic experiences we have. We plan these candid wedding photography sessions carefully because the conditions shift as the afternoon moves on.
The rubber estates and the Kumarakom backwaters both change character with the season. The estate canopy is denser and greener just after the monsoon, while the backwater light is at its clearest and calmest from October through February, the same window most Kerala weddings prefer. Couples planning an estate reception outside that window should expect wetter ground and softer light. We plan around whichever season a Kottayam wedding falls into rather than assuming the dry months.
Kumarakom backwater receptions
Kumarakom is a short drive from Kottayam town and one of the most beautiful reception settings in all of Kerala. The backwater light at sunset, the houseboats on the lake, the way the water catches the sky in the late afternoon: these are settings that reward knowing exactly where to stand.
