Marathwada and its Deccan character

This is Marathwada, and the region carries its own character within Maharashtra: drier than the western districts, historically less prosperous, and shaped by the long Nizam rule from Hyderabad that ended only after independence. Weddings here follow Marathi custom with that Deccan inflection, and the Muslim community across the old city marries according to its own tradition with Hyderabadi rather than North Indian influence.

The Marathi wedding ritual order

Marathi ritual applies at Hindu weddings: sakhar puda, halad chadavane, the antarpat and the mangalashtak, then kanyadaan and saptapadi. The ceremony is quick and understated, which is the point of it, and it will not accommodate a photographer who has not learned the order.

Paithani silk, woven at Paithan

Paithan, about fifty kilometres south on the Godavari, is where the Paithani saree has been woven for around two thousand years. Real Paithani uses silk with pure gold or silver zari and the pallu motifs are woven rather than printed, which means the fabric behaves under light like nothing a power loom produces. A bride in a genuine Paithani deserves exposure and editing that hold both the zari and the deep dyed ground, and a batch-processed gallery will lose one of them.

Shooting at Ajanta and Ellora

Ellora is a UNESCO World Heritage site holding thirty-four Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain rock-cut temples side by side, with the Kailasa temple as its centre. Ajanta, about a hundred kilometres out, holds the painted caves. Both are under Archaeological Survey control with strict conditions: photography inside Ajanta's painted caves is heavily restricted to protect the murals, flash is prohibited, and commercial shoots require permission and fees.

Being honest about Ajanta matters. Couples see the paintings and imagine a session inside the caves. That is not available in the way they picture, and we say so at the enquiry stage rather than after they have booked flights. Ellora's exteriors and the Kailasa courtyard give far more room to work.

Daulatabad Fort, on its conical hill with the spiral approach and the dark passage cut through the rock, and Bibi ka Maqbara, built as a smaller answer to the Taj, are the settings closer to the city and both are considerably less restricted.

Himroo, Mashru and the city textile trade

Himroo and Mashru weaving belong to this city specifically, brocade traditions brought in under the Delhi Sultanate's move to the Deccan and still worked by a small number of weavers here. Alongside Paithani from down the road, it gives Aurangabad a textile heritage that most couples marrying here have some connection to, and it is worth photographing as its own subject rather than as background to a portrait.

Grishneshwar, beside the Ellora caves, is one of the twelve jyotirlingas and draws couples for a temple visit around the wedding. Its rules apply and we confirm them rather than assuming that access for pilgrims extends to a photography crew.

When to visit Aurangabad

Season is October to March. Marathwada summers from April to June are severe and dry, and the monsoon runs July to September, when the hills around Ajanta green up substantially and the approach to the caves becomes far more scenic.

Anyone hiring a wedding photographer in Aurangabad should ask what has actually been cleared with the Archaeological Survey and what has not, because the gap between what these sites look like in photographs and what a commercial crew is permitted to do there is wide.
