Snow country, not a colonial hill town

Manali is snow country in a way Shimla is not, and that is the distinction couples are usually choosing between. Solang Valley and the approaches to Rohtang hold snow far later in the year, the peaks are visible from the valley floor, and the whole register is alpine rather than Victorian. Solang and the Rohtang approaches

Solang is the setting most sessions are built around. Open meadow at around two and a half thousand metres, with the ridge line behind it, and paragliders and skiers in season depending on the month. It is also busy, and the parking area and activity zone are not the parts you want in a photograph. We work the edges and the upper meadow rather than the tourist strip.

Rohtang Pass and the Atal Tunnel changed access to the far side of the mountains completely. The tunnel runs over nine kilometres under the pass and opens the Lahaul valley year round, which puts high, barren, snow-held landscape within reach of a Manali base in a way that used to require the pass being open. Rohtang itself needs permits, which are limited daily and issued in advance.

Old Manali, the Beas and Naggar

Old Manali, up the hill from the main town, has the slate-roofed timber houses, the Manu temple, and the orchards, and it is a different world from the Mall Road below. The Hadimba Devi temple, built in the sixteenth century out of wood in the cedar grove, is the town's most distinctive structure and it is a working temple with its own rules.

The Beas gives the valley its other register: fast, cold, boulder-strewn water with riverside properties along its banks. Several resorts sit directly on the river and host small weddings, which works well because the sound and movement of the water carry into a film in a way stills cannot show.

Altitude, cold and getting there

Altitude and cold are the practical constraints. Manali sits above two thousand metres and Solang higher still, batteries drain faster in the cold, and a couple in wedding clothes at altitude in January suffers for it. We plan short exposures to the cold with warm shelter between them rather than a long continuous session.

Naggar, about twenty kilometres down the valley, is worth building into a session. The castle there is a five-hundred-year-old timber and stone structure looking straight across the valley, and the Roerich estate on the slope above it holds the Russian painter's house and gallery among deodar. Both are quieter than anything in Manali town, both give architecture that the valley otherwise lacks, and the drive down is short enough to fit into a half day.

Access is the risk that couples underestimate. The road up from Chandigarh takes eight to ten hours and is subject to landslides in the monsoon and to snow closures in deep winter. A wedding party travelling in the day before a January date is taking a real chance, and we build margin into our own travel accordingly.

The two Manali seasons

Season splits into two useful windows. December to February gives snow and the coldest conditions. March to June gives clear weather, accessible high country, and the meadows in flower. The monsoon from July to September brings landslide risk to the whole valley and is best avoided entirely.
