What Ooty is booked for

Ooty is mainly a pre-wedding and destination-wedding place for us rather than a hometown wedding market. Couples come here from Coimbatore, Bangalore, Chennai, and Kerala for a session in the hills, or for a small ceremony at one of the heritage properties, and go home to marry properly in front of their families.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the detail that separates Ooty from every other hill station in South India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, it still runs a steam locomotive on the steepest section, and the blue-and-cream carriages photograph like nothing else available in the region. Shooting around the railway means working to a public timetable and within railway property rules, so we plan the session around the train rather than hoping to catch it.

Colonial architecture and the gardens

Colonial architecture is Ooty's other inheritance. The Madras Presidency summered here, and what it left behind is a town of stone churches, planters' bungalows, and clubs with lawns and hedges. St Stephen's Church, built in the 1830s with teak carried up from Tipu Sultan's palace at Srirangapatna, is the oldest church in the Nilgiris and it still holds weddings.

The Government Botanical Gardens and the Rose Garden give a couple manicured, high-altitude greenery within the town itself, though both are public and busy through the season. Early morning is the only realistic window if you want them without crowds, and we schedule accordingly rather than promising an empty frame at noon.

Ooty Lake, Doddabetta and Coonoor

Ooty Lake, the eucalyptus stands along the Doddabetta road, and the tea slopes running down towards Coonoor each give a different register. Coonoor, twenty minutes below Ooty, is quieter and greener and often the better choice when a couple wants tea country without the town traffic. We frequently split a session across both.

Altitude, the drive up and the season

Altitude changes the light in ways that matter technically. The sun is harsher and the shadows are harder at 2,200 metres than at sea level, the cloud moves fast enough to change exposure inside a minute, and the temperature drops sharply once the sun goes behind a ridge. A session here needs a plan that can move, and clothing advice we give couples in advance.

Getting here is part of the plan rather than an afterthought. The road up from Mettupalayam climbs thirty-six hairpin bends, the Gudalur approach from Kerala is longer but gentler, and both take considerably longer than a map suggests once the season traffic starts. A couple driving up on the morning of a shoot will arrive tired and late. We schedule the first session for the day after arrival wherever the itinerary allows it.

Season is the other constraint. April through June is peak tourist season and the town is full. The southwest monsoon runs June to September and the northeast monsoon brings a second wet spell in October and November. October through early December and the February to March window give the clearest conditions with the fewest crowds.

Small weddings, candid coverage and films

A wedding photographer in Ooty is booked far more often for the days around a wedding than for the ceremony itself, though the heritage hotels do host small ceremonies and receptions. Those are quiet events by design and we photograph them that way, with less posed formality and more attention to the couple and the setting. Candid wedding photography carries over naturally into a hill session, where the best frames come from walking rather than posing. Wedding cinematography is available for couples who want the mist and the movement of the Nilgiris on film alongside the stills.
