The Bihari wedding sequence

Bihari weddings are long, ritually dense, and heavily attended, and coverage sized for a compact ceremony will come back incomplete. The sequence runs across several days with the tilak, the matkor, the haldi, the baraat, the dwar puja at the gate, the pheras, and the vidaai, and the family observes each stage properly rather than trimming it.

The dwar puja

The dwar puja, where the groom's party is received at the threshold and the two families meet formally, is a moment Bihari families weight heavily and it is easy for an outside photographer to underplay. It happens in a crowd, at the gate, usually at night, with everybody pressing in. Position matters more than equipment there.

Anand Karaj at Takht Sri Patna Sahib

Takht Sri Patna Sahib is one of the five takhts of Sikhism, marking Guru Gobind Singh's birthplace, and it draws pilgrims from across the world. The Ganga is the city's real asset for photography. The ghats at Gandhi Ghat and the long riverfront, with the Mahatma Gandhi Setu crossing to the north bank, give open water and enormous sky. Early morning on the river, before the city is up, is the strongest session available here.

Chhath Puja, fog and the season

Chhath Puja in the autumn is the festival that matters most in Bihar and it takes the city and its ghats entirely. Families return home for it in enormous numbers, transport is saturated for a week either side, and no wedding should be scheduled against it. We flag it as soon as we see an October or November date.

Bodh Gaya and Nalanda give the region settings that Patna itself does not. Bodh Gaya, about two and a half hours south, holds the Mahabodhi temple and the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, a World Heritage site with its own conditions on photography. Nalanda's excavated monastery, closer at around ninety minutes, is red brick spread across open ground and it is quiet in a way nothing in Patna is. Both need a full day rather than a stop on the way to something else.

Season is November to February. Bihar summers are severe and the monsoon from June to September raises the Ganga substantially, with flooding a recurring reality across the state. Winter brings dense fog that regularly delays flights and trains into Patna.
